## "Flutter is Dead", Tech's Favorite Running Gag

Every few months it pops up: the headline that Flutter is about to be killed. Google is shutting down the project. Nobody uses it anymore. Native only from now on. And then... nothing happens. Flutter keeps existing, keeps getting better, and the next "Flutter is dead" headline arrives in a few months.

I've been using Flutter daily for client projects. Time to argue with actual numbers instead of gut feelings.

## The Numbers Speak Clearly

In December 2024, Google published current statistics at their #FlutterInProduction event. These don't come from Google themselves, but from Apptopia, an independent analytics company that tracks millions of apps:

**Nearly 30% of all new free iOS apps were built with Flutter in 2024.**

That's not a niche framework. That's mainstream. In 2021, the share was around 10%. It tripled in three years.

And there's more:

- Over 1 million active Flutter developers per month
- More than 90,000 developers in Flutter meetups worldwide
- Top-5 open-source project on GitHub by contributions

## Who Bets on Flutter: Not Startups, Corporations

If Flutter were really about to be shut down, the compliance departments of large enterprises would know. They have people whose entire job is evaluating technical risks.

Yet these companies bet on Flutter:

### LG Electronics

In 2024, LG announced they're migrating their webOS apps for Smart TVs to Flutter. Not as an experiment, but for production. The result of their pilot project (an Electronic Program Guide for Japanese TVs):

> "Without any optimization whatsoever, our Flutter rewrite launched twice as fast as our original app, consumed less runtime memory, and felt more responsive and playful to use."

Flutter apps will run on LG TVs worldwide starting in 2025. Through the Re:New program, they'll reach older models too. We're talking about **tens of millions** of televisions.

### Toyota

Toyota uses Flutter for their infotainment systems. Not for a website, not for a companion app, for the software that runs in every car. With the same quality standards Toyota applies to their engines.

Direct quote from Daniel Hall, Chief Engineer at Toyota Motor North America:

> "Flutter's open source principles and high-growth developer community have been critical to our success."

### eBay, MGM, Whirlpool

The list goes on. eBay has Flutter apps. MGM uses Flutter. Whirlpool too. These aren't tech startups jumping on every hype. These are companies with long-term roadmaps. Where Flutter is heading in 2026 is written up in the [**Flutter roadmap 2026**](https://robocitrus.com/en/blog/flutter-roadmap-2026-und-grosse-refactorings).

## Google Itself: Dart for 80% of Revenue

Here's where it gets interesting: Google's Ads platform, responsible for roughly 80% of company revenue, runs on Dart. The language Flutter is built on.

Look at the source code of ads.google.com. That's Dart. Has been for over a decade.

Google has a massive financial interest in Dart and Flutter existing and working well. This isn't a side project that gets cut in the next reorg.

And Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, recently showed a demo built with Flutter. When the CEO showcases your framework, you're probably not about to be discontinued.

## The Ecosystem is Growing

Flutter isn't just Google. A whole ecosystem has emerged around the framework:

- **Serverpod**: Full-stack Dart backend (I use it for [**my own app development**](https://robocitrus.com/en/blog/warum-ich-flutter-liebe))
- **Shorebird**: Code Push for Flutter, updates without App Store review
- **FlutterFlow/Dreamflow**: Visual builder with AI integration
- **Widgetbook**: Design system tools for Flutter (more in [**design systems in Flutter**](https://robocitrus.com/en/blog/design-system-flutter-design-tokens-ki-agenten))
- **Patrol**: End-to-end testing
- **Globe/Invertase**: Dart-specific cloud hosting

Even Expo, for years the heart of the React Native ecosystem, added Flutter support. When your "competitor" integrates you, you're doing something right.

## Real Talk: What Flutter Can't Do

I don't want to write a marketing brochure here. Flutter has real limitations:

**Web Performance for Content Sites**: Flutter Web is designed for apps, not SEO-optimized websites. For blogs or marketing pages, use Nuxt, Astro, or Next.js instead.

**Hardcore Native Features**: If you need to push ARKit to its limits or access specialized hardware, it gets more complex. Possible, but the cross-platform advantage shrinks.

**Bundle Size**: Flutter apps are larger than native apps. Not a real problem with modern phones and bandwidth, but measurable.

**Recruiting**: There are more iOS/Android developers than Flutter developers. For large teams, this can be a factor.

These are real disadvantages. For most projects, the advantages still clearly outweigh them.

## Why Does the "Flutter is Dead" Narrative Even Exist?

A few theories:

1. **Google's Track Record**: Yes, Google kills products. But Flutter isn't a messaging app, it's infrastructure that Google itself uses massively.
2. **Native Purists**: There are still developers who fundamentally reject cross-platform. The arguments from 2015 ("React Native is slow, hybrid is garbage") get projected onto Flutter, even though Flutter works fundamentally differently.
3. **Clickbait**: "Flutter is dead" generates clicks. "Flutter continues to evolve steadily" is just more boring.
4. **Fear of Vendor Lock-in**: Understandable, but Flutter is open source. Even if Google stopped tomorrow, the community could continue. See: forked projects like Fuchsia.

## My Personal Conclusion

I've been using Flutter for years. I've built digital learning platforms, B2B apps, and MVPs with it. The productivity is real. The performance is real. The codebase reduction is real.

Will Flutter die someday? Everything dies eventually. But based on current numbers, ecosystem growth, and enterprise adoptions, I don't see that happening in the next 5-10 years.

If you're currently considering [**having an app developed**](https://robocitrus.com/en/blog/app-entwickeln-lassen), Flutter is a safe choice. Not experimental technology, but a production-proven framework with massive industry adoption.

The "Flutter is dead" headline will come again in 2027. And I'll still be ignoring it in 2027.
